Coat trends may come and go but as far as we’re concerned, a mannish tailored coat is eternal. (Especially in timeless toffee and black.) We love the updates suggested here with the lipstick red 7/8th trousers, walkable heels and squashy clutch.

Vintage 90s photo showing that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. The just-boyish-enough white shirt and loose-fit chinos represent Gap at its classic, affordable, best. We would add a delicate stacking ring and a charm necklace to add a little more personality…

Vintage Vogue shoot from the 1980s and has it dated? Not one bit. A fine knit navy sweater (fine enough to tuck in), loose linen trousers and chocolate loafers have just a hint of Katharine Hepburn masculine flair, offset with a defined waist and berry red lips.
